Machrie Hotel Staff Accommodation, Isle of Islay

Erection of ancillary 13 staff/supervisor accommodation units, staff recreation unit, staff caravans with associated access/car parking and installation of sewage treatment plant at The Machrie Hotel, Port Ellen, Isle of Islay, Argyll & Bute.

The application for planning permission was submitted August 2023 and granted under officer delegated powers on 30 May 2024.

Rural development, location adjacent to sensitive landscape/ecology (SSSI, SPA), drainage/flooding, parking, boundary treatment, landscape fit (design/materials/scale/massing), occupancy.

SHP was engaged in a productive pre-application process with Argyll & Bute Council and provided applicant strategic planning advice on application approach given planning history. Pre-application community engagement was advised given the scale of the community and likely interest, despite being a local application, and resulted in no objections. SHP worked closely with the project team in preparing the Planning Statement, liaising on design evolution, advising on/contributing to other supporting documents, and preparing and submitting the planning application. Holding objections from SEPA and NatureScot were resolved to reach a positive resolution at officer level without the need to go to planning committee.
